It’s been a decade since Defender has been a steadfast partner of the Australian Red Cross, playing a crucial role in supporting disaster relief efforts across Australia. This collaboration has been particularly impactful in South Australia, where the Australian Red Cross South Australia Emergency Services team is dedicated to supporting regional and remote communities like Kangarilla before, during, and after disasters.  

Kangarilla has faced its share of challenges, having been impacted by bushfires and floods in the past. In response, the Red Cross has introduced the RediCommunities programme, a series of community-led workshops designed to bolster local resilience and prepare residents for future disasters. This initiative is a testament to the belief that every community possesses unique strengths and insights that are crucial for developing effective local disaster response strategies. 

The RediCommunities workshops in Kangarilla have facilitated vital conversations among community members, helping them to map out their resources, understand the potential impacts of disasters, and forge a community action plan tailored to their specific needs. This plan has led to the implementation of the Pillowcase Project, an innovative approach to emergency preparedness education for children. Inspired by students using pillowcases to carry their belongings during emergencies, the Pillowcase workshops equip children with the knowledge and tools to feel safe, manage stress, and respond effectively in crises. 

The partnership between Defender and the Australian Red Cross has been instrumental in these efforts. Defender vehicles, known for their strength and reliability, have enabled Red Cross teams to access remote areas like Kangarilla, delivering not only personnel but also the necessary supplies to conduct these life-saving programs. This support extends beyond logistics; it reflects a shared commitment to fostering a culture of preparedness and resilience. 

Through initiatives like RediCommunities and the Pillowcase Project, and with the ongoing support of Defender, the Australian Red Cross continues to make a significant impact in Adelaide and beyond. The partnership not only helps communities prepare for and respond to disasters but also strengthens the social fabric and resilience of communities at risk.
